Larian Studios Announce a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The buzz about this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer packed with intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team might be crafting a faster-paced experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a announcement clip is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it pioneered the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and flexible progression—qualities that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs only possible with a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, allowing players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be approached in multiple ways, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, players can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
