French authorities to begin stopping small boats in English Channel following British demands
French officials have consented to begin stopping migrant vessels in the Channel, following months of insistence from the UK.
The change in policy follows the British leader sent a letter to the French leader urging him to back the plan and saying there presently "have no effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police will be allowed to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to official statements.
French authorities have infrequently acted to prevent the heavily loaded boats leaving the shoreline because it is considered excessively high a danger to both officers and individuals.
"It is crucial that we deploy these tactics this month... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson states personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the aim of safeguarding lives.
Notably, the official excluded the use of nets to stop boats, which had previously been reported as a potential method to snarl the propellers of the boats.
This determination to take action at all is a major step forward, coming after a brief shift towards a stricter strategy this summer, which ceased when the former government official departed from office.
That was highlighted in July, preceding a meeting between the UK leader and French president, when French police were witnessed wading into the sea to slash the sides of a boat.
Currently French officials will again be permitted to intercept boats prior to they pick up asylum-seeking individuals from the beaches of France's north coast, although it's uncertain how the vessels will be prevented.
Strong winds are presently delaying the commencement of interceptions and the people-smuggling gangs will be seeking methods to adapt to evade detection, as they have done so often in the previous instances.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for comment.
